ABSTRACT
Objective
Today, in an era where healthcare services are becoming increasingly complex, the role of nurses is not limited to medical interventions only skills in providing psychosocial and spiritual support are also expected. This study aims to evaluate the effect of a program that improves nursing students’ abilities to manage psychoeducational groups on their perception of psychiatric nursing.
Methods
The research was conducted with a pre test-post test quasi-experimental design. Twenty-nine nursing students studying at Ondokuz Mayıs University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing and participating in clinical practice within the scope of the Mental Health and Diseases Nursing Intern Practice Course were included in the study. Personal Information Form and Psychiatric Nursing Perception Level Scale were used as data collection forms in the research. A 6-session psychoeducation group management skill development program was applied to the students participating in the study. While the program was continuing, a follow-up test was applied to the students in the 3rd week, and the research data was obtained by applying a post test 3 weeks after the follow-up test.
Results
The results of the study showed that there was a significant increase in the positive views and a significant decrease in the negative views of nursing students who took the psychoeducation program regarding their perception of psychiatric nursing (p<0.05).
Conclusion
It was concluded that the skill development program for nursing students in creating and managing psychoeducation groups increased the perception level of psychiatric nursing. These findings emphasize the importance of psychoeducational programs in nursing education. In the future, it is recommended that similar studies be conducted with larger samples and at different education levels.
